Early Southern "Smooth Rifle", circa 1780
Chambers round-faced English lock, American Black Walnut stock (6 yr air dried SC Mountain wood)
45 inch Charles Burton Oct-rd tapered .52 caliber smooth barrel.
Hand forged iron mounts "strap" butt plate, trigger guard, 2 upper thimbles (no entry thimble), tear drop lock bolt inlays, 1-piece "swedged" nose cap. Handmade single trigger and plate, maple pivoting patch box. Carving includes relief molding along toe line and upper forearm, plain beaver tail around tang, cheek piece molding. 3-1/2 inch handmade tip on tapered ramrod, 8x32 thread.
Patina/stressed finish on wood and metal. 13-1/2 inch pull, 3 inch drop, 1/4 inch cast off, 7 pound 10 ounces, butt 1-3/4 X 5 inch.
